SUMMARY

DSProxy does not maintain directory service state information. DSProxy issues Microsoft Outlook 2000 referrals in a round-robin fashion among the global catalog servers within a topology. DSProxy is not aware if one of these global catalog servers goes down, and continues to issue referrals to this global catalog server.

All Outlook 2000 users who receive a referral to this inactive global catalog server must do either of the following:

Restart Outlook 2000. -or-
Request DSProxy to generate a new referral. When Outlook 2000 receives a referral, the name of the global catalog server is stored in the following registry key on the client:
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging SubSystem\Profiles\name of mapi profile\dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182
The fastest way to get a referral to a new global catalog server is to follow these steps:
1. Quit Outlook 2000.
2. Make sure that the MAPI spooler has stopped. (If you see "mapisp32.exe" in Task Manager, it is still active. It will stop on its own.)
3. Delete the value stored in the preceding registry key.
4. Restart Outlook 2000.

This forces Outlook 2000 to request DSProxy to generate a new referral. However, you may have to do this several times because there is a chance that the new acquired referral will once again be the downed global catalog server.
