PRB: Migrating a Windows 95/98 MTS Machine to Windows 2000 Purges Msdtc.txt (241373)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Transaction Server 2.0
  • Microsoft COM+ 1.5

This article was previously published under Q241373

SYMPTOMS

Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) puts the log stream in the Msdtc.txt file in the MTSLogs folder. This file is referred to as the event log on Microsoft Windows 95-based and Microsoft Windows 98-based computers.

The Msdtc.txt file is deleted when migrating a Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) machine from Windows 95, Windows 98, to Microsoft Windows XP.

CAUSE

The Msdtc.txt file is deleted in Windows 2000 and Windows XP because Windows NT already has an event log and therefore the Msdtc.txt file is no longer needed.

You can access the Event Viewer in Windows 2000 or Windows XP either by:
  • On the Start menu, point to Programs, then Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer. -or-

  • Through Component Services Explorer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
