Upgrading Right-to-Left Windows 95 to Windows 98 Removes Localization of System Components (241348)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q241348

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 (with Internet Explorer 5 installed) to Arabic or Hebrew Microsoft Windows 98 localized edition, some elements of the operating system may remain in English (that is, non-localized). This may include icons, menus, the Windows Explorer, and possibly several other system components.

CAUSE

Arabic and Hebrew Microsoft Windows 98 (localized editions) include localized Internet Explorer 4. When this is upgraded over a Microsoft Windows 95 system running Internet Explorer 5 (which is installed by default with Microsoft Office 2000), a conflict arises that leaves the system in an unsupported configuration.

RESOLUTION

Before Microsoft Windows 95 can be upgraded to Microsoft Windows 98, Internet Explorer 5 must be removed from the system. Use the following steps to resolve this issue:
  1. In Microsoft Windows 95 Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  2. Remove Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools.
  3. After Internet Explorer 5 has been removed, you can upgrade your operating system to right-to-left (bidirectional) Microsoft Windows 98 localized edition.
