DSS80: Device Not Listed in Multimedia Tool, Cannot Install the Software, or Device Listed as USB Device (241237)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on your computer, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • The Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 may no longer be available as a Preferred Playback Device on the Audio tab in the Multimedia tool in Control Panel.

  • When you attempt to install the Microsoft Digital Sound System software, you may be unable to do so, or the computer may stop responding (hang).

  • The Microsoft Digital Sound System Composite Device may be replaced by a USB Composite Device in Device Manager. Additionally, when you attempt to update the driver, you may receive the following error message on a blue screen:

    Fatal Exception in Vmm32.vxd

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the device in Device Manager, reinstall the Microsoft Digital Sound System software using the "nodiag" switch, and then restart the computer. To do this:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Universal Serial Bus Controller to expand the branch.
  5. Click the Microsoft Digital Sound System Composite Device or the USB Composite Device, click Remove, and then click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click No.
  6. Insert the Microsoft Digital Sound System software CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. When you insert the CD-ROM, press and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the installation program from starting automatically.
  7. Click Start, and then click Run.
  8. In the Open box, type the following line

    cdrom:\Setup\setup.exe nodiag

    where cdrom is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the Microsoft Digital Sound System software. When you are prompted to restart Microsoft Windows, do so.

    When Windows restarts, the Microsoft Digital Sound System is redetected by Windows.
NOTE: In order to play digital CD audio with your CD-ROM drive, you may need to select the Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device check box on the CD Music tab in the Multimedia tool in Control Panel.
