Computer Hangs Entering ACPI S4 Mode with a USB Device Connected (241084)

SYMPTOMS

When your notebook computer attempts to enter Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) S4 (suspend to disk) mode, the computer may stop responding (hang) if there is a Universal Serial Bus (USB) device such as a USB mouse connected to the computer.

CAUSE

When the computer attempts to enter ACPI S4 mode, the USB Host controller is removed. Windows is then unable to cancel requests previously made to the USB devices.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
