User Logon Name Field Is Empty After Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Upgrade (240393)

When you migrate user accounts from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000, the Properties of those accounts may display an empty User Logon Name text box when you view them in the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in. This is also true for all Windows user logon (SAM) names that comply with any RFC-compliant version of Domain Name System.

Microsoft has confirmed that this behavior occurs by design.

Although the User Logon Name value is not automatically populated, an implicit Universal Principal Name (as defined by the IETF RFC 822 in the form of User_Name@Fqdn.com) is assigned to every account by default. This takes the form of the user's SAM account combined with the fully qualified domain name. For example, SAM_Account_Name@Fqdn.com.
