SUMMARY

The first time you log on to a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer, the Getting Started with Windows 2000 dialog box is displayed. This article describes how to disable this dialog box and how to prevent it from appearing for each new user that logs on. WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Disabling the Getting Started with Windows 2000 Dialog Box

  1. Start Registry Editor (click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK).
  2. Click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine window.
  3. On the Registry menu, click Load Hive.
  4. From the C:\Documents and Settings\Default User folder (or its equivalent), click the Ntuser.dat file, and then click Open.
  5. In the Key Name box, type ntuser, and then click OK.
  6. Click the Ntuser registry key.
  7. Locate the Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Explorer\Tips key, and then double-click the REG_DWORD value.
  8. Change the default value of 1 to 0, and then click OK.
  9. Click the Ntuser registry key.
  10. On the Registry menu, click Unload Hive, and then click Yes.
  11. Quit Registry Editor.
