Works 2000: Works 2000 Word Processor Changes File Extension of Document (240001)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000

This article was previously published under Q240001

SYMPTOMS

When you open more than one document in the Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor from the most recently used (MRU) list on the File menu, the second and subsequent documents that you open are named on the title bar with a .wps file extension regardless of the file type of the document.

For example, if you open the Test1.doc file from the MRU list, and then open the Test2.doc file from the MRU list, the Test1.doc file is named correctly on the title bar, but the Test2.doc file is named Test2.wps on the title bar.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Works 2000 Word Processor opens files as Works Word Processor (.wps) files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

You can save a Works 2000 Word Processor document in any file format for which Works 2000 includes a document converter. When you attempt to save a document with an original file extension other than .wps, Works 2000 automatically opens the Save As dialog box.
