The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q239793

SYMPTOMS

When you type a narrow column of text, Word may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following are all true:
  • Your document has a large right margin (for example, 6 inches).
  • The Automatically hyphenate document check box in the Hyphenation dialog box is selected.
  • Word hyphenates a word.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this behavior, clear the Automatically hyphenate document check box, and make the right margin smaller. When you have finished typing your text, reset the right margin and select the Automatically hyphenate document check box.

To clear the Automatically hyphenate document check box, do the following:
  1. On the Tools menu, point to Language and then click Hyphenation.
  2. In the Hyphenation dialog box, click to clear the Automatically hyphenate document check box.
  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
