Unable to Install Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 3.1 (239550)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 3.1, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Internet Tools for Win 3.1/NT 3.51 requires a configuration larger than 4mb for reasonable performance.

On smaller machines, please continue to use previous version of Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your computer contains more the 40 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, run Internet Explorer Setup using the setup /f:16 command to limit the amount of memory used by Setup:
  1. In Program Manager, click Run on the File menu.
  2. In the Command Line box, type the following command

    drive:\setup folder\setup /f:16

    where drive and setup folder are the drive and folder in which the Setup.exe file is located.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to install Internet Explorer.
