Works 2000: Chart Does Not Appear As Expected (239386)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000
  • Microsoft Works Suite 2000

This article was previously published under Q239386

SYMPTOMS

When you create a chart in Microsoft Works 2000 Spreadsheet, nonsensical black and white data may appear on the left side of the chart.

This behavior can occur whether you select Across or Down on the Advanced Option tab.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • The first column in the chart contains time-formatted data.

    -and-
  • At least the third column contains data with absolute values of less than 1.

    -and-
  • You select a chart type from the first column of Basic Options in the New Chart dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Change the formatting of the Time column to Text.

When you change Time formatting to Text formatting, the data changes from hours, minutes, and seconds to a decimal fraction of the 24-hour day (time serial number). If you want to keep the time in the same visual format, you must re-enter the time with the appearance that you want. For example, a time of 1:15 A.M. changes to 0.0520833 in Text format.

TIP: If you forget what the original time was, multiply the time serial number by 24 to get the hour. For example, .0520833 multiplied by 24 gives you 1.25; therefore, the hour is 1 A.M. To find the minutes, multiply the decimal remainder (.25) by 60 to get 15. The serial number .0520833 is the time 1:15 A.M. If the hour value is greater than 12, subtract 12 to get the P.M. time. An hour value of 13, for example, is the time 1 P.M.

Method 2

Select a chart type from the second, third, or fourth column on the Basic Options tab in the New Chart dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
