  • Microsoft Works 2000
  • Microsoft Works Suite 2000

This article was previously published under Q239383

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to restore a minimized chart, the Windows System menu expands under File on the menu bar and the System menu begins to flicker. The Works Spreadsheet stops responding.

If you are using the Microsoft Windows 98 operating system, you can press ALT+TAB to switch to another program, and then when you switch back to the Works spreadsheet, the program is working as expected again.

If you are using the Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 operating system, you may have to press CTLR+ALT+DELETE and manually close the Spreadsheet. This may result in data loss if you did not recently save the spreadsheet.

NOTE: You may be given the opportunity to save the spreadsheet data before the program closes. If the Do you want to save... message appears, click Yes to save and name the file.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you follow a sequence of events similar to the following example:
  1. Start the Works Spreadsheet.
  2. Enter the following data:
       A1: 1
       B1: 2

  3. Select cells A1:B1.
  4. On the Standard toolbar, click New Chart.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Minimize the chart.
  7. Minimize the data sheet.
  8. Click the File menu.

    The File menu, expands.
  9. Press ESCAPE.

The File menu shrinks, but File remains embossed on the menu bar.
  10. Click the minimized chart title bar.
  11. The Windows System menu appears under File on the menu bar and the System menu begins to flicker.

RESOLUTION

Method 1

To work around this issue, if you see an embossed menu title on the menu bar, click to expand the menu and then click outside the expanded menu to shrink the menu. The menu title will no longer appear embossed.

Method 2

To work around this issue and regain control of the Works Spreadsheet:
  • With Windows 98, press ALT+TAB and switch to another program or file, and then switch back to the spreadsheet you want.
  • With Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, save the spreadsheet data before you create a chart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
