Works 2000: Works Stops Responding When You Attempt to Insert a Spreadsheet (239313)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000

This article was previously published under Q239313

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a spreadsheet into a Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor document (click Spreadsheet on the Insert menu), you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Works cannot open another spreadsheet or database. You can have only six Works spreadsheets or databases open at one time. Close at least one spreadsheet or database, and then try again.
When you click OK on the error message, Microsoft Windows may stop responding (hang) for approximately 30 seconds, but Works 2000 may stop responding for five minutes or more.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if six instances of Works 2000 Spreadsheet or Works 2000 Database are open when you attempt to insert the spreadsheet into the word processor document.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, wait two to five minutes for the computer and Works 2000 to become fully responsive. If after five minutes Works 2000 is still not responding, manually quit the program. To manually quit Works 2000 on Windows 98, follow these steps:
  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
  2. Select Microsoft Works in the Close Program list, and then click End Task.

You can now reopen Works 2000 and work normally.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Works 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

To work around this behavior, open only five or fewer instances of the spreadsheet or database before attempting to insert a spreadsheet into a Works 2000 Word Processor document.
