Works: Works Programs Don't Run After Incomplete Installation of Internet Explorer 5.0 (239291)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Works 2000
  • Microsoft Works 6

This article was previously published under Q239291

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Works on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later is one of the components that is installed if it is not already on your computer.

However, the installation of Internet Explorer may quit with the following error message:
Setup was unable to download information about available installation sites.
If you attempt to install Works after an incomplete installation of Internet Explorer, the installation of Works is completed but you may not be able to run any of the Works programs. The following error message may appear:
Works cannot find a file it needs to run ... Run setup again.

CAUSE

Internet Explorer may display the error message given in the "Symptoms" section because Works is installed in a network environment. Installing Works over a network is not supported.

RESOLUTION

You can resolve this issue by installing Works from a CD-ROM and not from a network.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If the Internet Explorer error message remains in the background during the Works installation, Works continues installing in the background, and eventually a dialog box appears indicating that the installation is complete. You are then prompted to restart the computer even though the Internet Explorer error message is still visible. At this point, Works is left in an unstable state because Internet Explorer has not been completely installed and has therefore been unable to complete the necessary file updates.

Even though the Works installation has completed, none of the Works programs run.
