This article was previously published under Q239233

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a mail merge in a Microsoft Word document, and you use a Microsoft Works database file or a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as your data source, the forward and backward slash marks in the field names are omitted from the Insert Merge Field list.

Slash marks are not omitted from the Fields list in the Insert Fields dialog box when you perform a mail merge in a Works 2000 Word Processor document.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, reformat field names in your database file to replace any slash marks with an appropriate word, such as or.

To reformat a field name, follow these steps:
  1. Start Works 2000, and then click the History tab.
  2. To open a document, click the row in which it is listed.

If the document that you want is not listed, you may need to scroll through the list of documents to see more of them.
  3. In your database file, click the field name. Notice that the entire column is selected.
  4. On the Format menu, click Field.
  5. In the Format window, remove the slash mark from the Field name box, and then replace it with an appropriate word.

MORE INFORMATION

Word does not omit space characters in the Insert Merge Field list. Instead, Word substitutes underscores for the space characters.
