  • Microsoft Works 6

This article was previously published under Q239219

SYMPTOMS

When you create a fax document in Microsoft Works 2000 or Microsoft Works 6 on a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, you may be unable to send the document as a fax message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if a fax service or utility is not installed on your computer.

By default, the Microsoft Fax service for Windows Messaging is not installed with Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install a fax program or a fax service for Windows Messaging.

To install the Microsoft Fax service:
  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the CD-ROM from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

    cd-rom:\tools\oldwin95\message\us

where cd-rom is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
  4. For information about the Microsoft Fax service, double-click the Wms-fax.txt file to open it in Notepad.
  5. If Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Windows Messaging Services, or Microsoft Outlook 97 or later is installed on your computer, proceed to the next step.

If neither Exchange, Windows Messaging Services, nor Outlook 97 or later are installed on your computer, double-click the Wms.exe file, and then follow the instructions on the screen to install Windows Messaging Services.
  6. Double-click the Awfax.exe file, and then follow the instructions on the screen to install the Microsoft At Work Fax service.
After you install Microsoft Fax on your Windows 98 computer, you can fax a Works document by dragging and dropping the document onto the Microsoft Fax icon on the Windows desktop.

MORE INFORMATION

To work around this issue, print the fax document from Works Word Processor, and then use a standard fax machine to send the message.

Microsoft Works is not a fax program, and the Microsoft Fax service is not included with Microsoft Works. The fax templates included with Microsoft Works are designed to be printed to paper and then sent with a standard fax machine.
