Works 2000: The Euro Currency Symbol Is Not Interpreted As a Currency Data Value (239172)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000
  • Microsoft Works Suite 2000

This article was previously published under Q239172

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Euro currency symbol (?) in a Microsoft Works 2000 spreadsheet, Works 2000 does not interpret this symbol as a currency data value. Instead, the Euro symbol is interpreted as text and the cell containing the Euro symbol is formatted as General.

For example, if you type the following in cell A1, and then press ENTER:

$50

cell A1 is formatted as Currency.

However, if you type the following in cell B1, and then press ENTER:

? 50

cell B1 is formatted as General.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the currency symbol in the Regional Settings dialog box in Control Panel is a dollar sign ($).

Works resolves the currency symbol by determining the currency symbol that is set in Control Panel.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, change the default currency symbol in Control Panel.

NOTE: When you change the default currency symbol to the Euro currency symbol, Works no longer resolves the dollar sign symbol as a currency symbol.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start on your Windows desktop.
  2. Point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In the Control Panel dialog box, double-click the Regional Settings icon.
  4. In the Regional Settings Properties dialog box, click the Currency tab.
  5. Click ? in the Currency symbol box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You experience the same symptoms if you format the cell as Currency, and then click Use the euro sign (?) as the currency symbol in the Format Cells dialog box.
