SYMPTOMS

When you import your mail merge address list in Direct Mail Manager (DMM), the following error message may appear:
This is an unexpected error. You should re-install Direct Mail Manager from the Microsoft Office 2000 Disc 2 to correct this problem.
After you click OK, DMM stops responding (hangs).

CAUSE

This problem occurs when there are eight or more address lines displayed (to be printed) in the Sample Address preview in Direct Mail Manager.

For example, this problem occurs when address fields are mapped to form an address similar to the following:

Full Name
Job Title
Company Name
Address1
Address2
Address3
Address4
City, State, Zip Code

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem from occurring, use seven lines or fewer in your address. To work around the error messages listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article, use the following steps:
  1. If Direct Mail Manager is not responding, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to access the Windows Close Program dialog box.
  2. In the Close Program dialog box, click to select Direct Mail Manager and click End Task.
  3. Start Direct Mail Manager and click Resume.
  4. When Direct Mail Manager asks Do you wish to import all of <file name>?, click Back.
  5. When Direct Mail Manager asks Is the address shown correctly?, click No, the address is not shown correctly here and then click Next.
  6. In the Describe List dialog box of Direct Mail Manager, map the Direct Mail Manager fields to include just the address fields that you need printed on the envelope. Make sure that the address fields you map equal seven lines or fewer in the Sample Address preview.

NOTE: To match your address list fields to field type in Direct Mail Manager, select a field from your address list and then select a Direct Mail Manager field. Match the fields until the Sample Address appears completely and correctly.
  7. Click Next to continue the import of your address list into Direct Mail Manager.
