SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a video file from Clip Gallery into another program, you may receive the following error message
Clip Gallery cannot launch the software component to handle Path\Filename
Where Path is the location of the video file and Filename is the name of the video file.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You are using Microsoft Clip Gallery to insert a video into a Microsoft Office document.
  • You do not have Windows Media Player installed on your computer.
You cannot use Clip Gallery to insert movie files into documents unless Media Player is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install Microsoft Media Player:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Windows Setup tab or the Windows NT Setup tab.
  4. In the list of Components, click Multimedia, and then click Details.

    NOTE: You need to click the word "Multimedia," not the check box next to Multimedia.
  5. In the list of Components, click to select the Media Player check box, and then click OK.
  6. Click OK.
  7. If you are prompted to insert your Microsoft Windows CD-ROM, do so, and then click OK.
  8. Close Control Panel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Microsoft Clip Gallery 3.0 is a shared program that enables you to embed pictures, sounds, and video clips in Microsoft Office 97 documents. To start Clip Gallery:
  1. On the Insert menu in your Office 97 document, click Object.
  2. In the Object type list, click Microsoft Clip Gallery, and then click OK.
If you click the Videos tab in Microsoft Clip Gallery, click a video file, and then click Insert, Clip Gallery creates a link to the video in your document. To play the video, double-click the video image.
