256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

After you install Internet Explorer 5, you may notice that the automatic configuration and proxy setting information for each connection is separate from the same information used for the LAN connection.

CAUSE

In Internet Explorer 5, each connection uses its own automatic configuration and proxy settings.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft recognizes that this new functionality is different from previous versions of Internet Explorer. Because you may require connections' automatic configuration or proxy settings to be the same as the LAN settings, Microsoft has provided a supported design-change "fix." You can use this "fix" to set all connections' automatic configuration and proxy settings (that are blank or not set for each connection) to the LAN settings. This "fix" has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Internet Explorer service pack that contains this "fix."

NOTE: This fix is specific to Internet Explorer 5, and should not be applied to an Internet Explorer 5.01 installation. Instead, perform the steps in the MORE INFORMATION section.

The English-language version of this "fix" should have the following file attributes or later:

DateTimeVersionSizeFile namePlatform
07/27/992:29 p.m.5.00.2719.2700459,024 bytesWininet.dllx86

The French-language version of this "fix" should have the following file attributes or later:

DateTimeVersionSizeFile namePlatform
09/13/199905:45a5.0.2719.2700459,024 bytesWininet.dllx86

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To properly implement this "fix," you must modify the registry for each client computer. Add a new DWORD value called DialupUseLanSettings with a data value of 1 to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

For IEAK builds, you must modify the following registry key in addition to the one mentioned in earlier in this article:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings - DWORD - DialupUseLanSettings
