SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Office 2000 Setup, you may not see any dialog boxes where you can enter information or make Setup selections, and the only dialog box displayed is a Windows Installer progress dialog box. When Setup is finished, if you try to run Setup again, you briefly see a Windows Installer dialog box, but you cannot access the Maintenance mode dialog box to make any maintenance selections (Repair Office, Add or Remove Features, Remove Office).

Also, when you try to start any of the Office programs, a Windows Installer dialog box briefly appears with the message "Preparing to install...", but the program fails to start.

CAUSE

These problems can occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • An incompatible version of the Imm32.dll file is installed on your computer.

    -or-
  • The Imm32.dll file is missing on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, uninstall Office, replace the Imm32.dll file with the original Microsoft Windows version, and then rerun Office Setup. To do this, follow these steps:

NOTE: If you do not yet have Office 2000 installed, please skip to step 4.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following, and then click OK:

    path\Setup.exe /x Data1.msi

where path is the full path to your Office Setup files.
  3. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the uninstall.
  4. In Windows Explorer, locate the Imm32.dll file in your C:\Windows\System folder.
  5. If the Imm32.dll file is found, rename Imm32.dll to Imm32.old. Otherwise, skip to the next step.
  6. Extract a new copy of Imm32.dll from your Windows CD-ROM and place the new copy in the C:\Windows\System folder.
