SBS 4.5 Clients Use 40-bit Encryption (236594)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q236594

SYMPTOMS

If you have a computer running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with 128-bit encryption and you install the BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) client software by running the SBS client Setup disk and logging on to the SBS computer, the server may be silently downgraded to a 40-bit version.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the service pack file (SP4i386.exe) is installed as part of the SBS client software from the \\server\clientapps share. This file is the 40-bit version of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the 128-bit version of SP4 or later on the SBS client. In SBS 4.5, the 128-bit version of SP4 (SP4setup.exe) is located in the Program Files\Microsoft BackOffice folder on the SBS computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5.
