BUG: Clicking "Sort keywords alphabetically" Button in HTML Help Workshop Causes IPF (236523)

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Sort keywords alphabetically button in a blank Microsoft HTML Help Workshop Index, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:
HHW caused an invalid page fault in HHW.EXE at 015f:0041b50w.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

When you click OK, the following message appears:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:
HHW caused an invalid page fault in MFC40.DLL at 015f:5f8012b6.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

RESOLUTION

Ensure that the Index contains at least one item before you click the Sort keywords alphabetically button.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft HTML Help Workshop 1.2 and 1.21.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open HTML Help Workshop and click the opening splash screen.
  2. On the File menu, click New.
  3. In the New box, click Index, and then click OK.
  4. Click the Sort keywords alphabetically button.

    Note that you receive the error described in the "Symptoms" section.
  5. Click Close to display the next error message.
  6. Click Close to close both the error message and HTML Help Workshop.
