SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) version 1.2 on your Windows 98 Second Edition based-computer, you may receive the following error message:
A newer version of DCOM98 has been installed. To override, you must uninstall the current version first.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the version of the Ole32.dll file in your computer is 4.71.1719.0 or earlier.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download DCOM98 for Windows 98 version 1.3 from the following Microsoft Web site:

To check the version of DCOM installed on a Windows 98 Second Edition based-computer, locate either of the following registry keys:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{BDC67890-4FC0-11D0-A805-00AA006D2EA4}\InstalledVersion
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BDC67890-4FC0-11D0-A805-00AA006D2EA4}\InstalledVersion
The version of the Ole32.dll file on a Windows 98 Second Edition based-computer is 4.71.2900.0 and the version of the Ole32.dll file installed on a Windows 98 computer is 4.71.1719.0. If the version of the Ole32.dll file is higher than 4.71.1719.0, then Setup may not complete successfully.
