Cannot Install Office Server Extensions on Windows 95/98/Me (235973)

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Office 2000 Server Extensions to a computer running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows 95, the following error message occurs:
You must be a member of the local Administrators Group to install the Microsoft Office Server Extensions. Setup cannot continue.
When you attempt to install the Office 2000 Server Extensions from the Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) CD, the following error message occurs:
Office Server Extensions cannot be installed on this computer.

CAUSE

The Office 2000 Server Extensions require Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0 in order to be installed.

WORKAROUND

Install the Office 2000 Server Extensions on a Windows NT computer that meets the minimum system requirements.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Office 2000 Server Extensions.

MORE INFORMATION

The Office Server Extensions are not intended to run on Windows Me, Windows 98, or Windows 95. The intended use for the Office Server Extensions is for intranet users to be able to collaborate on Office documents through a collaboration server.

The collaboration functionality is made possible by a combination of SQL Server (or MSDE), Windows NT, IIS or PWS 4.0 or later, and the Office 2000 Server Extensions.
