This article offers some suggestions for resolving this error to successfully import e-mail from Eudora. The individual sections in the More Information section are presented in order of simplest to most complex tasks:
  • A virus utility is running in the background.
  • Convert addresses and e-mail messages separately.
  • Decrease the Eudora e-mail storage file size.
  • Export the Eudora e-mail storage file to a text format before importing.
  • Compact the e-mail folders in Eudora before importing.
  • Use Outlook Express to import e-mail before importing.
  • Separate mail in Eudora into multiple mail boxes before importing.
  • Use the Windows Installer to replace Impmail.dll with a new copy.
Use these suggestions in the order presented, trying the simplest first and then proceeding to the next suggestion in order.

MORE INFORMATION

A Virus Utility Is Running in the Background

Many virus utilities install monitoring software to run at startup. If you have such software running, close it and attempt the import again.

Convert Addresses and E-mail Messages Separately

In the Import/Export Wizard there are two options, one to import e-mail and another to import addresses. Select only one option so that you import addresses and e-mail in two separate operations.

Decrease the Eudora Mail Storage File Size

The Eudora mail storage file structure retains the space reserved for all e-mail messages even though they may have been deleted. Use the Eudora Compact Mailboxes command to optimize the mail storage files and then attempt the import.

Export the Eudora Mail Storage File to a Text Format Before Importing

Use the Eudora Export command to save the e-mail to a comma-separated-values file, or tab-delimited file, and then use the Import/Export Wizard to import these files.

Use Outlook Express to Import E-mail Before Importing

Use the Import command in Outlook Express to import the e-mail and then use the Import/Export Wizard in Outlook to import Outlook Express e-mail.

Separate E-mail in Eudora into Multiple Mail Boxes

In Eudora, create additional mail boxes and reduce the size of the original mail storage by moving mail to the new mail boxes. Use the Import/Export Wizard in Outlook to import the individual mailboxes.

Use the Windows Installer to Replace Impmail.dll with a New Copy

To replace the file, Impmail.dll, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Outlook. On the Start menu, click Find, and then click Files and Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type Impmail.dll. Ensure that the Look In box has your entire hard drive selected. Click Find Now.
  3. Right-click the located file and then click Rename. Rename the file to Impmail.old and then close Find All Files.
  4. Start Outlook. On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair.
  5. In Detect and Repair, Click Start. You may be prompted for your Office 2000 or Outlook 2000 compact disc.
  6. Once the Detect and Repair process completes, start Outlook and then attempt to import the Eudora items.
