Insert Discussion in the Document Button Is Unavailable (235311)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 95

This article was previously published under Q235311

SYMPTOMS

When you use Internet Explorer 5 to view a discussion Web site, the Insert Discussion in the Document button may become unavailable.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, disable the discussion feature, and then re-enable this feature.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Explorer 5.0.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem only occurs when viewing a discussion Web site that starts a frame set. For example, if you select a Microsoft Word 2000 document, you can create an inline discussion on the page. You receive the standard Internet Explorer 5 Discussion toolbar on the bottom of the page, with the option to insert an "inline" discussion. If you then select a Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 document, the inline discussion button on the toolbar is now disabled; as with PowerPoint documents, you can only have "document" discussions, not inline discussions. Note that even if you now select a Word 2000 document, the icon for inserting an inline discussion is still disabled. You can open up any other document or standard Web pages, and the functionality remains disabled.
