Shared Folders Snap-in Does Not Display CD-ROM or Removable Drives in Remote Connections (235271)

SYMPTOMS

When you are attempting to create a new share on a CD-ROM drive or a removable-media drive on a remote computer by using the Shared Folders component of the Computer Management snap-in or by using the Shared Folders snap-in, only the physical drives that are shared by default with a "$" administrative share are displayed in the Create Shared Folders Wizard when you click Browse. No CD-ROM drives or removable-media drives are listed.

CAUSE

Removable-media drives are not assigned a "$" administrative share by default, and cannot be browsed in this fashion.

RESOLUTION

Even though you cannot browse the drive letters, you can type the correct drive letter and path in the Folder to Share box to create a new share on these drive types. If you are unaware of the drive letter for the drive, you can use the Logical Drives component of the Computer Management snap-in, or add the Disk Management snap-in to a new Microsoft Management Console (MMC) and specify the remote computer, to determine the drive letter.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
