XFOR: Read-Only Files in Pickup Directory Cause SMTP Service to Loop (234243)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000

This article was previously published under Q234243

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft SMTP service, you may notice that a message gets stuck in the Pickup directory (usually Inetpub\Mailroot\Pickup).

CAUSE

If the file has the read-only attribute set, the SMTP service sends the message, but cannot delete it. This results in an infinite loop with the service constantly trying to deliver the message. This problem may also be caused by insufficient NTFS permissions to the Pickup directory. Make sure that the Everyone group and the System account both have Full Control permissions.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the SMTP service that is included in Windows 2000 and Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
