  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q233205

SYMPTOMS

The limits enforced on message size by SMTP blocks the delivery of system messages such as non-delivery reports (NDRs) and public folder replication that exceed the size limit.

WORKAROUND

To allow large messages such as replication between public folders or NDRs, you must increase the size limit allowed on inbound SMTP connections.

Follow these steps to work around this problem.
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. In the left pane, double-click the Administrative Groups container.
  3. Under the Administrative Groups container, double-click to expand the container of the administrative group where the server with message size restrictions is located.
  4. In the left window, locate the Servers container under the relevant Administrative Group, and double-click to expand it.
  5. In the left pane, double-click the stub for the specific server that you want to fix.
  6. In the left pane, double-click the Protocols container for this server.
  7. In the left pane, click the SMTP container.
  8. In the right pane, click the virtual server instance, and then right-click. Click Properties from the context menu.
  9. On the Messages tab of the Properties page, make the necessary adjustments to the message size by editing the entry for Limit Message size to (KB).
