SUMMARY

This article describes a design difference between Windows NT and Windows 95/98 when they function as Remote Access Service (RAS) clients.

MORE INFORMATION

When a client dials into a RAS server, the RAS server projects the name server Internet Protocol (IP) addresses configured in its TCP/IP properties to the RAS client. The RAS client then uses or disregards this information.

When there are no name server IP addresses configured on the RAS server, both clients behave identically. Windows NT and Windows 95/98 RAS clients use the statically configured name server IP addresses specified in their Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection properties.

When there are name server IP addresses configured on the RAS server, the clients behave differently. Windows NT RAS clients still use the statically configured name server IP addresses specified in their DUN connection properties, but Windows 95/98 clients do not.

The following name servers are used by a Windows 95/98 RAS client (in order of precedence):
  • Dial-up adapter on the Windows 95/98 RAS client:
    When name servers are configured in the Windows 95/98 RAS client's dial-up adapter properties, these name servers are used even if the Windows 95/98 DUN connection's properties are configured with name server addresses, or if the RAS server is projecting its name servers.
  • Name server IP addresses that the RAS server projects:
    The name server IP addresses that the RAS server projects are used even if the Windows 95/98 RAS client's DUN connections are configured with name server IP addresses.
  • DUN connection on the Windows 95/98 RAS client:
    If the RAS server does not have name server IP addresses configured, the Windows 95/98 RAS client's DUN connection configuration is used.

Example

Dial-up adapter on Windows 95/98 RAS client:

WINS= 1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.2 DNS=1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.2

RAS Server:

WINS= 3.3.3.3, 4.4.4.4 DNS= 3.3.3.3, 4.4.4.4

DUN Connection on Windows 95/98 RAS client:

WINS= 5.5.5.5, 6.6.6.6 DNS= 5.5.5.5, 6.6.6.6

In this example, after connecting to the RAS server, the Winipcfg tool on the Windows 95/98 RAS client shows only the name servers configured for the dial-up adapter (WINS= 1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.2; DNS=1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.2).

If only the RAS server and the Windows 95/98 RAS client's DUN connection are configured, the RAS server name servers are used (WINS= 3.3.3.3, 4.4.4.4; DNS= 3.3.3.3, 4.4.4.4).

If there are no name servers configured on the RAS server, the name servers specified in the Windows 95/98 RAS client's DUN connection are used (WINS= 5.5.5.5, 6.6.6.6; DNS= 5.5.5.5, 6.6.6.6).
