OL2000: Unable to Insert Internet Shortcut (233050)

SYMPTOMS

When you click the File command on the Insert menu and then select an Internet shortcut, you receive the following error message:
You cannot use an Internet address here. Enter a path that points to a location on your computer or on the network.

RESOLUTION

There are two possible work arounds for this behavior.
  • Paste the Uniform Resource Locator (URL), from the Internet Properties page, into the message.
  • Drag the Internet shortcut to the message body.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

To paste the URL into a mail message, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files and Folders.
  2. On the Advanced tab, in the Of Type list, click Internet Shortcut.
  3. On the Name & Location tab, in the Named box, type the name of the shortcut. Ensure that the entire hard disk drive is selected in the Look In list, and then click Find Now.
  4. Right-click the shortcut, and click Properties.
  5. Select the URL and copy it by pressing CTRL+C. Click OK.
  6. Click in the mail message body. Paste the URL by pressing CTRL+V.
You can drag the shortcut file to the mail message also. Position the Find:All Files window containing the located Shortcut file next to the message window, and drag the shortcut from the found files list to the mail message body.
