The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q233041

SUMMARY

When you try to gain access to an Exchange 2000 Server computer by using an Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) client, you cannot issue a logon command by using the full Domain Name System (DNS) domain name of your Exchange 2000 server. To connect to your Exchange 2000 server with an IMAP client, you must specify your domain name by using a network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) name.

MORE INFORMATION

If you try to use the full DNS domain name, such as "microsoft.xyz.com," as your domain name when you log on by using an IMAP client, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
. BAD Protocol Error: "Provided username is not valid"
To gain access to your Exchange 2000 Server with IMAP, do not use the complete DNS name. Use the NetBIOS domain name.

For example, instead of using "microsoft.xyz.com" as the domain name, use "microsoft" as the domain name:
  1. Start a Telnet session by using the following command:

    telnet (IP_address_of_Exchange_2000_server) 143

If this command works, you receive the following response from the server:

    +OK Microsoft Exchange IMAP4rev1 server version x.x.x (F.Q.D.N.) ready

  2. Type the following command:

    ? login microsoft/administrator password

NOTE: If you log on by using the ? login microsoft.xyz.com/administrator password command, you receive the following error message:
. BAD Protocol Error: "Provided username is not valid"
