Two Modems Listed After Windows 98 Second Edition Upgrade (232919)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 95-based or Windows 98-based computer to Windows 98 Second Edition, there may be two modems listed in the Modems tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your US Robotics Courier v.Everything modem is incorrectly detected as a US Robotics Courier HST Dual Standard Fax+ASL+Cell modem before you upgraded to Windows 98 Second Edition. After you upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition, your US Robotics Courier v.Everything modem is correctly identified and installed, but the first incorrect modem entry is not removed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, remove the US Robotics Courier HST Dual Standard Fax+ASL+Cell modem from the Modems tool in Control Panel:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Modems.
  2. Click Courier HST Dual Standard Fax+ASL+Cell, click Remove, and then click Close.
