To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are presented in.

Download and Install the Most Recent Version of Microsoft DirectX

Extract a New Copy of the Joy.cpl File

Extract a new copy of the Joy.cpl file from the Microsoft Windows CD-ROM or the appropriate floppy disk to the following folder: where drive is the hard disk on which Windows is installed.

Reinstall Microsoft Windows

To reinstall Windows:

1. Insert the Windows CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, or insert the Windows Disk 1 floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK:

   drive:\setup

   where drive is the letter of your CD-ROM or floppy disk drive.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall Windows.
   
   Note You may have to reinstall the SideWinder Game Controller software after you reinstall Windows.
