This article was previously published under Q232277

SYMPTOMS

When you print a chart containing a fill pattern from a Microsoft Excel chart or Microsoft Graph chart, the chart fill pattern prints so finely that it appears to be a solid gray color.

NOTE: This problem occurs even if the chart patterns are displayed correctly on the screen and are printed correctly on other printers.

CAUSE

The printer resolution for your Hewlett Packard LaserJet printer is set to 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) or higher.

NOTE: The resolution for most HP LaserJet printers is set to 300 dpi or higher by default.

WORKAROUND

If the fill patterns of your Excel or Graph chart print as solid gray, you must reduce the printer resolution to either 75 dpi or 150 dpi, so that the fill pattern is discernable.

To change the printer resolution, use the following steps:

NOTE: The procedure to change the resolution with which your printer prints may be different with your specific printer.
  1. On the File menu in Word, click Print.
  2. In the Print dialog box, click Properties.
  3. On the Graphics tab, change the Resolution to either 150 dots per inch or 75 dots per inch.
  4. Click OK to close the HP LaserJet Properties dialog box.
  5. Click OK to print your Word document.
