WD2000: Tabs Follow Paragraph/Line Direction Rather Than Text Direction When Saved As HTML (231493)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q231493

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a left-to-right tab in a right-to-left paragraph and save the file as HTML, the tab appears on the wrong side of the text. The opposite is also true, when a right-to-left tab is inserted in a left-to-right paragraph. The result is that when you view it in your Web browser, the tabbing structure is lost.

Example:

In Word you see:

fourth    third    second    first

But after viewing in HTML you see:

first    second    third    fourth

WORKAROUND

It is recommended that you use tables instead of tabs when you type Latin text in right-to-left paragraphs, or Hebrew or Arabic text in left-to-right paragraphs if you are going to export to HTML. The table structure will remain intact in HTML, which gives you the correct display in Internet Explorer or other browser.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
