You are repeatedly prompted for a user name and password when you try to open a Web site in FrontPage 2002 (230803)

This article was previously published under Q230803 SYMPTOMS When you try to open a Web site in Microsoft FrontPage 2002 or through a
Network Place (Web Folders), you are repeatedly prompted for a user name and
password, even though the credentials you supply have sufficient permissions to
open the subweb. CAUSE This behavior occurs because you are trying to edit a
SharePoint team Web site in FrontPage or by using Network Place.
When FrontPage or Network Places tries to open a subweb, it uses the Web
Extender Client to communicate with the server. In establishing the connection,
it requests the _vti_inf.html and other files in the root Web site. If
anonymous access is turned off at the root level, and the user name supplied
has no user rights to the root, FrontPage fails to read those files and
repeatedly prompts for a user name and password. RESOLUTION To resolve this behavior, the administrator must grant the
user a minimum of browse access to the root of that server. MORE INFORMATION If you are using a SharePoint Team Services (STS) subweb,
any modification to content that is done through the browser interface, (for
example, editing items in a list or adding a contact), does not require any
permissions on the root Web site. However if you edit content in an STS subweb
outside the browser by using a separate program, (for example, trying to edit a
Word document from the subweb's document library or opening the Web site in
FrontPage), then browse access to the root Web site is still
required.
