This article was previously published under Q230766

SYMPTOMS

DirectShow programs may not provide playback when they are used with analog overlay DVD hardware supported by Windows Driver Model (WDM) drivers.

This problem is known to occur in conjunction with the Creative PC-DVD Encore Dxr2 DVD-ROM system.

The problem affects DVDPlay, Microsoft Encarta 99, anything using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.1 for DVD playback, any DVD video player program using DirectShow, and any DVD-ROM or DVD video title using DirectShow.

CAUSE

The implementation of DirectShow provided with the products listed above cannot provide WDM drivers with chroma key information during calibration. As a result, WDM drivers cannot show video.

MORE INFORMATION

Unlike digital solutions, analog overlay technology does not require a compatible feature connector on the video adapter. Analog overlay places decoded MPEG-2 images on top of a key color in the video adapter output, and sends the composite to the monitor. The video image can bleed into windows that inadvertently use this key color.
