SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to enable the Chat feature in Links LS 1999 Edition, you may receive the following error message:
The sound recording device is already in use by another application. Exit the application and try to audio chat again.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one of the following sound cards is installed in your computer:

  • Creative Labs Ensoniq AudioPCI
  • Creative Labs Sound Blaster 128
  • Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 64
  • Turtle Beach Montego
  • Diamond Monster Sound

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method for your sound card.

Creative Labs

To resolve this issue, configure the Game Compatible Device to be the preferred audio playback and recording device. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Multimedia.
  3. In the Preferred Device box under Playback, click Game Compatible Device.
  4. In the Preferred Device box under Recording, click Game Compatible Device.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Close Control Panel.

Turtle Beach or Diamond

To resolve this issue, disable DirectSound Hardware Acceleration. To do this:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the icon for your sound card (for example, TBS Montego Audio or Aureal Audio).
  3. Click the A3D Settings tab.
  4. Click to select the Disable DirectSound Hardware Acceleration check box, and then click Close.
  5. Close Control Panel, and then restart the computer.
