SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may experience either of the following symptoms:

  • The screen may turn black.

  • The screen may flash or blink repeatedly.


In addition, the game may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your video adapter does not support Microsoft DirectX.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact your hardware manufacturer to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest version of the video driver for your video adapter.

To determine the manufacturer and model of the display adapter installed in the computer, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Click View Devices By Type.
  5. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Display Adapters to expand the branch.
  6. Note the manufacturer and model of the display adapter listed in the Display Adapters branch.
  7. Click Cancel, and then close Control Panel.
