SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft WebTV for Windows and you scan for channels, you may receive the following error message:
Critical files are missing or corrupted. Please re-install WebTV for Windows.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if all of the following conditions exist:
  • Your screen resolution is set to 640 X 480 pixels the first time you scan for channels.
  • You alter your screen resolution, and then upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition.
  • After the upgrade, you scan for channels again.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, after you upgrade your computer, change your screen resolution to 640 X 480 pixels and then change it to the resolution you want before you scan for channels:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, click WebTV, press F6, and then click Minimize.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab, move the Screen Area slider to 640 X 480 pixels.
  4. Click OK, click OK, and then click Yes.
  5. Double-click Display, click the Settings tab, move the Screen Area slider to the resolution you want.
  6. Click OK, click OK, and then click Yes.
