256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

After you install and then uninstall Microsoft Plus! for Kids, you are unable to use the Desktop Themes tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because when you install Plus! for Kids, it changes the location of the Themes.exe file in the registry to Plus!for kids\themes.exe. However, when you uninstall the program it removes that registry key.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this issue, manually recreate the registry key. To do so, use Registry Editor to view the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App paths\THEMES.EXE

Click this key, and then edit the path to be this new path

drive letter:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes.exe

where drive letter is the letter assigned to the drive that contains your Program Files\Plus! folder.
