XL2000: Blank Space Appears Around Objects in Web Page Saved in Excel (229040)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Web page that you have saved in Microsoft Excel, blank space appears around objects on the page.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • Your Excel worksheet contains one or more of the following objects:

    • Charts
    • Office Art
    • Clip Art Objects
    • Pictures
    • Text Boxes
    • WordArt
    • Any object inserted from the Object dialog box.

    -and-

  • One or more of the objects are positioned over cells that contain non-default formatting or data.

    -and-

  • You save your Excel workbook in the HTML file format.

    -and-

  • You open the HTML file in one of the following Web browsers:

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0x
    • Netscape Navigator 3.0x

WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open the file in Excel.
  2. Position any objects on the worksheet so that they do not overlap cells that contain data.
  3. Save the file.
The next time that you open the file in your Web browser, the page will be displayed correctly.
