This article was previously published under Q229038

SYMPTOMS

When you open or publish a file to an Microsoft Office 2000 or FrontPage 2000 Extended Web server, a garbled error message similar to the following may occur:
?ServerName ? ? 80???? Web ??????????????????Proxy ????????????????????????????? Web ????????????
Where ServerName is the name or IP address of your Office 2000 Server Extended Web server. The error may appear as a dialog box, or you may be directed to look at the Wecerr.txt file that contains the corrupted message. Your only option is to click OK.

-OR-

When you perform a Search, you may see a series of square boxes instead of text describing how many documents were found by a FrontPage Search component.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the English version of the Fpext.msg file, which Internet Explorer 5.0a is installing as part of Web Folders, is corrupt.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1
  1. Rename your Fpext.msg file.
  2. Locate Fpext.msg on your Microsoft Office 2000 compact disc.
  3. Copy Fpext.msg from your Microsoft Office 2000 compact disc to the location in which it was originally installed.

By default, the Fpext.msg file is installed to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared \Web Server Extensions\40\bin\1033.

Method 2

Reinstall Microsoft Office 2000.

Note: "Repair" does not work because the *.msg file has no version.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft Office 2000 Server Extensions.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Internet Explorer 5.0a after installing Microsoft Office, and specifically select the option to install Web Folders, Internet Explorer replaces Fpext.msg with a corrupted version of the file. In this scenario, all Web Extender Client and server extender messages for local servers will be corrupted. This includes those messages that go into the Wecerr.txt file, as well as those that are shown in the FrontPage 2000 Client.

These unexpected characters may appear in place of any alert or message sent to the author or browser by the Web Server Extensions.

A typical install of Office Premium results in the correct, non-corrupted file being installed.
