SUMMARY

When a volume that contains Remote Installation Server (RIS) images also contains a mount point or junction to another folder, the Single Instance Store feature (SIS) does not operate on the duplicate files in the junction or mount point. When the volume nears capacity and a new image needs to be stored, you can create a mount point or junction that links it to another local volume that has sufficient free space.

SIS is installed with RIS to move duplicate files to a common folder (SIS Common Store), while referring the files to this location to decrease storage requirements.

MORE INFORMATION

SIS operates on the physical volume and does not flow through the junction or mount point. For more information about how SIS identifies and works on a volume, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

226545 How Single Instance Storage Identifies Which Volumes to Manage

Also, SIS requires that the volume be formatted with the Windows 2000 NTFS file system. Junctions or mount points do not require that the target be formatted with NTFS, only the origin.
