Upgrade

No Upgrade for Beta Versions of Small Business Server

Beta releases of Small Business Server cannot be upgraded to the final retail version of either Small Business Server 4.5 or BackOffice Server 4.5. If you installed Small Business Server 4.5 beta software, you must uninstall each individual beta version application before you install the retail version of Small Business Server 4.5. If you do not uninstall the beta versions, Setup will fail and the beta version of the application will remain on your server computer.

Remove All Shortcuts from the Startup Programs Group Prior to Upgrading to Small Business Server 4.5

Small Business Server 4.5 Setup will restart your computer a number of times. To avoid potential problems during setup, you should remove all shortcuts from the Startup Programs group.

Uninstalling SQL Server 6.5

When uninstalling SQL Server 6.5 after you have upgraded from Small Business Server 4.0 to Small Business Server 4.5, you will receive a pop-up message that is slightly hidden behind the Modifying Services dialog box. You will be able to see the OK button for the slightly hidden message. Click the OK button to finish uninstalling SQL Server.

Upgrade Exchange 5.5 to Include Site Connector

If you upgrade the Small Business Server version of Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Server to the retail version of Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Server, which includes Site Connector, choose the Reinstall option at the beginning of Exchange Server Setup. The reinstall option will retain existing Exchange mailboxes and configuration settings.

Internet Explorer 5 Favorites and Homepage May Not Update Following Small Business Server Upgrade

If you install Internet Explorer 5 on your Small Business Server 4.0x computer, and then upgrade to Small Business Server version 4.5, Internet Explorer will retain all previous settings. Some of these settings have changed, and are no longer correct in Small Business Server 4.5.

Please see the Small Business Server Online Guide topic "Reinstall Client Applications" and link to "Install Internet Explorer on a Client Computer." The following adjustments need to be made for Internet Explorer on the Small Business Server computer.

To add Favorites entries to the menu:

Add the following Web site Favorites to the menu: To set the default home page to the Client User Guide:
  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
  3. Select the General tab.
  4. Under Home Page, type the following in the Address box: http://localhost/intranet/sbsclienthelp/default.asp.

Server Setup Disk Partitions Created with Non-Microsoft Utilities May Cause Setup to Fail

If the first partition on your hard drive has been created with a non-Microsoft disk management tool, Setup may fail after the text-mode phase of Windows NT Server installation with the message "NTDETECT FAILED." If you encounter this error, there are two ways to proceed.
  • Exit Setup, recreate the first partition using DOS or Windows 95/98 Fdisk.exe or another partitioning utility, and then restart Setup.
  • Exit Setup, remove all of the partitions, including the OEM utility partition (if it exists), and then restart Setup. If you delete all partitions, you may delete OEM-provided drivers. Make sure you have a copy of the OEM drivers before doing this procedure.
Caution Consult your hardware documentation or systems provider for information about restoring a partition and drivers that have been removed from the computer.

To recreate the first partition using Fdisk.exe:
  1. Format a blank disk with format /s using a Windows 95 or Windows 98 computer. This will be the "rebuild" disk.
  2. Copy Fdisk.exe from C:\Windows\Command to the rebuild disk.
  3. Copy Format.com from C:\Windows\Command to the rebuild disk.
  4. Insert the rebuild disk into the server's floppy drive.
  5. Restart the server.
  6. Using Fdisk on the rebuild disk, delete and recreate the first partition after the utility partition. You will be limited to a 2 GB partition size.
  7. Exit Fdisk and restart the server with the rebuild disk still in the floppy drive.
  8. Format the new partition (C:).
  9. Remove the rebuild disk and replace it with the NT Server boot disk.
  10. Restart the server and restart Windows NT Server Setup.
To remove all of the partitions using Fdisk.exe:
  1. Format a blank disk with format /s using a Windows 95 or Windows 98 computer. This will be the "delete" disk.
  2. Copy Fdisk.exe from C:\Windows\Command to the delete disk.
  3. Copy Format.com from C:\Windows\Command to the delete disk.
  4. Insert the delete disk into the server's floppy drive.
  5. Restart the server.
  6. Using Fdisk on the delete disk, delete all of the partitions on the hard drive.
  7. Remove the delete disk and replace it with the NT Server boot disk.
  8. Restart the server and restart Windows NT Server Setup.

Small Business Server Setup Will Not Automatically Detect 8255x Intel Network Interface Cards

If you have an Intel 82557, 82558, or 82559-based network interface card installed on your Small Business Server computer, Small Business Server Setup will not detect and install the card. You must install the card manually from the Hardware Confirmation page during Small Business Server Setup. Follow the instructions in the next release note to install the card manually. When installing your network interface card, make sure that you use the Have Disk option instead of selecting an Intel network adapter from the list displayed in the Network Control Panel.

Bindings Must Be Adjusted If Your Network Interface Card Was Not Auto-detected During Windows NT Server Setup and the MS Loopback Adapter Was Installed

If you manually install the driver for your network interface card during Small Business Server Setup, you must adjust the binding orders.

To install the Intel 8255x network interface card and adjust bindings on the server:

If you clicked Next on the Hardware Confirmation page without manually installing the driver for your network interface card, you will see a message that there is no network adapter installed. Select No when asked if you want to continue. You will be returned to the Hardware Confirmation page. Complete the following steps:
  1. On the Hardware Confirmation page, click Change, and then select Network.
  2. Select the Adapters tab.
  3. Select MS Loopback Adapter, and then click Remove.
  4. A message asking to confirm your action will appear. Click OK.
  5. Click Add, and then click Have Disk.
  6. Insert the disk containing the network adapter driver.
  7. Click OK, and then select the adapter type from the drop-down list. Acknowledge any vendor-specific messages that appear.
  8. Select the Bindings tab and open the tree view so that you can see the network adapter listed under each binding type. Move your network adapter to the top of each list.
  9. Click Close. The TCP/IP Properties page will appear.
  10. Select Specify an IP address.
  11. Type 10.0.0.2 for the IP address.
  12. Type 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask.
  13. Select the WINS Address tab.
  14. Type 10.0.0.2 for the primary and secondary WINS server.
  15. Click OK and then click Yes to restart your computer. After the computer restarts, Small Business Server setup will continue automatically.

Small Business Server Setup Fails and Displays a Blank Window Titled "Csvroot.exe"

If Remote Access Service (RAS) is not properly configured, it can cause the program Csvroot.exe to fail. This condition will also prevent the Small Business Server console from running correctly. To correct this problem:
  1. Close the blank Csvroot.exe window.
  2. Close the Small Business Server console (it may display as a blank screen without icons or text).
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  4. Select the Services tab.
  5. Select Remote Access Server, and then click Remove.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the removal. Click Yes to restart the server.
  7. After the restart, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  8. Select the Services tab.
  9. Click Add.
  10. Select Remote Access Service.
  11. Click OK.
  12. On the Add RAS Device page, verify that your modem is listed and then click OK.

Jet 3.5 Has Known Year 2000 Issues

During installation of Windows NT Server 4.0 Option Pack (NTOP), older versions of Jet 3.5 .dll files are copied into the \Winnt\System32 folder. BackOffice Server 4.5 does not use any of these .dll files.

There are known Year 2000 issues with Jet 3.5. To avoid encountering these issues, copy the updated Jet 3.5 files located in the \Support\Y2k\Platform\Msjet35\ folder of BackOffice Server Disc 1 to the Systemdrive:\Winnt\System32\ folder of your BackOffice Server computer.

Internet Access

Starting Internet Explorer 5 Prompts Users for a Password

If users are prompted to enter a password when starting Internet Explorer 5 or when attempting to access an Internet site, they may not have permission to access the Internet.

To give a user Internet access permission:
  1. Open the Microsoft Small Business Server Management Console.
  2. Select More Tasks, and then click Manage Internet Access.
  3. Click Control Access to the Internet.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to give a user Internet access permission.

Exchange Administrator Exits Unexpectedly After Configuring TURN

Exchange Administrator may exit unexpectedly while running the Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard if you choose to use TURN with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to dequeue mail. To correct this problem, disable SSL.

To disable SSL:
  1. From the More Tasks page in the SBS Console, click Manage Internet Access.
  2. Click Configure Internet Hardware. The Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard will start.
  3. On the Receive Exchange Mail page of the wizard, disable SSL.

Internet Mail Delivery May Not Occur Before Demand-Dial Router Disconnects from the Internet

Small Business Server uses a program called Sbsetrn.exe to retrieve mail. By default, Sbsetrn will run every hour to retrieve mail. When Sbsetrn runs, the demand-dial router will connect to the Internet. Under some circumstances the demand-dial router will connect, but it will take over a minute for Sbsetrn to send the signal to retrieve mail. Other custom commands may do the same thing.

Demand-dial routers will disconnect after a period of inactivity. The router may disconnect before mail is delivered if that period is less than one minute. To correct this problem, configure your router to wait for more than one minute of inactivity.

"Failed to Access Inbox" Error When Using Outlook Web Access (OWA)

This error occurs when a user attempts to open their mailbox using a web browser to connect to Outlook Web Access. Typically this error represents a permissions problem when logging on to the mailbox. To correct this problem give the built-in group "Everyone" permission to log on locally.

To give the built-in group "Everyone" permission to log on locally:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools (Common), and then click User Manager for Domains.
  2. On the Policies menu, click User Rights. The User Rights Policy box will appear.
  3. On the Right list, select Log on locally and then click Add. The Add Users and Groups box will appear.
  4. Under Names, select Everyone and then click Add.
  5. Click OK twice to save your changes and close the User Rights Policy box.
Setting Log on locally for the Everyone group can have security repercussions. If your server is connected to the Internet, make sure that you have enabled the Proxy Server firewall features. A simple way to enable the firewall is to use the Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard. This wizard can be accessed from the Manage Internet Access link on the More Tasks tab of the Small Business Server Console.

Cannot Use Telnet if Packet Filtering is Enabled

If Packet Filtering is enabled in Microsoft Proxy Server, Telnet will not work.

To correct this problem:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Proxy Server, and then click Microsoft Management Console.
  2. Expand Internet Information Server.
  3. Expand the name of your Small Business Server computer.
  4. Right-click Web Proxy, and then click Properties.
  5. Under Shared services, click Security.
  6. On the Security properties page, click Add.
  7. Under Exceptions, select Telnet: custom filter, and then click Edit.
  8. Modify the settings as follows:
    • Protocol ID: TCP
    • Direction: Both
    • Local port: Any
    • Remote port: 23
    • Local Host: Default proxy external IP addresses
    • Remote Host: Any host

Configure Firewall Settings Box Doesn't Appear When Using Router, DSL, Cable Modem or Other Broadband Connection

When a second network interface card (NIC) is used to connect to the Internet, the Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard will display the Configure Firewall Settings dialog box. This dialog box appears because Small Business Server assumes it will route Internet traffic. This dialog box will not appear if the second NIC is using a non-routable IP scheme.

To correct the problem you must remove the non-routable IP scheme from the Proxy Server's Local Address Table (LAT). For example, if your Small Business Server has a second NIC that is connected to a router, and the router's IP address is 192.168.16.x, you must remove the 192.168.16.x range from the Proxy Server's LAT or you must change the IP address of the router.

To correct the Proxy Server's LAT:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Proxy Server, and then click Microsoft Management Console.
  2. In the Console Tree, expand the Internet Information Server folder, and then expand your server computer node.
  3. Select Web Proxy.
  4. On the Action menu, click Properties.
  5. On the Web Proxy Service Properties For Server page, select the Service tab.
  6. Under Configuration, click Local Address Table.
  7. From the Internal IP ranges list, select the IP range to be removed, and then click Remove.
  8. Click OK twice to save your changes and close the Web Proxy Service Properties page.

Change Password is Grayed Out In Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard

Following the upgrade from Small Business Server 4.0/4.0a to Small Business Server 4.5, the Change Password option in the Change Internet Settings page of the Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard is grayed out. After an upgrade, the Small Business Server is unable to determine which RAS phonebook entry is used for connecting to your ISP. Without knowing the correct phonebook entry, it is impossible to change the password correctly. To correct this problem, please use the Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard to set the phonebook entry as well as the password.

To access the Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard:
  1. From your Small Business Server console, select the More Tasks tab, click Manage Internet Access, and then click Connect to the Internet.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Select Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.
  4. Select Modem or terminal adapter, and then click Next.
  5. Select a phonebook entry (or create a new one), type a password, type it again for Confirm password, and then click Next.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the wizard.
