PPT2000: PowerPoint Stops Responding When You Open an HTML File (228575)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

This article was previously published under Q228575

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) file in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, PowerPoint may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the HTML file that you are attempting to open contains an HTML Object tag. PowerPoint may go into a loop and stop responding when it encounters an Object tag.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, open the HTML file in an HTML editor, such as Microsoft FrontPage, and remove the Object tag and the contents within the tag.

NOTE: You may want to save the file under a new name to preserve the contents of the original file. Now when you open the file in PowerPoint, the HTML file opens as expected, but without the object.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in PowerPoint 2000. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office XP.
