Tape's Internal and External Name Is Changed in Removable Storage (228210)

When you use the Windows 2000 Backup tool to perform a tape backup or you
use Remote Storage to offload unused files to tape, the tape's name changes in both Backup and the Removable Storage snap-in the first time Backup or Remote Storage writes to the tape.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, you can use the /n switch (ntbackup /n) to change the tape label when you perform a backup, or you can type the label you want again in the Backup dialog box.
The /n {"media name"} switch specifies the new tape name. Do not use the /a switch with the /n switch.

This behavior is by design.

When you insert a new tape and use the Removable Storage Management snap-in to prepare the tape, Removable Storage usually labels the tape with a sequence number unless the tape has a barcode. An administrator can then change the tape's display name in that tape's properties
to something that better fits the organization's way of controlling tapes. From this point on, programs can change the tape's display name; the change is reflected in Backup and in the Removable Storage Management snap-in.
