"Folder Settings" Folder Disappears When Its Parent Folder Is Customized (227990)

SYMPTOMS

If you customize a folder that has a subfolder named Folder Settings, the subfolder named Folder Settings may seem to disappear.

CAUSE

When you customize a folder, Windows 2000 saves files necessary for that customization in a subfolder named Folder Settings. The Folder Settings folder is marked as hidden. If a folder named Folder Settings exists, Windows 2000 marks the existing Folder Settings folder as hidden and places the necessary files in the existing folder. If the "Hide protected operating system files" and "Do not show hidden files and folders" options are enabled, the Folder Settings folder disappears.

The "Hide protected operating system files" and "Do not show hidden files and folders" options are enabled by default.

RESOLUTION

To recover your data in the Folder Settings folder:

In Windows Explorer, click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders.
Click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.
Move the data you want to recover from the Folder Settings folder to a new folder, and then change the folder options back to their original settings.

If you must use folders named Folder Settings, either do not use Web view, or do not customize folders that contain a subfolder named Folder Settings.
